914-6 Owner Comments
Well - er - OK..:-) Not being a thermal physicist or anything - I'm guessing that what I'm seeing in better cooling efficiency for a couple of reasons - the primary one keeping heat away from the valve covers, which are excellent thermal conductors back to the oil and top end of the engine. What I do notice is a slight drop in overall oil temps on the street, as well as the engine stays pegged at 180-185 deg. longer even on "spirited" highway drives. My setup on the 914-6 is a 3.0, Webers, Vellios engine center mount from PelicanParts, and an external 930 cooler mounted in the front trunk (now that's a BIG COOLER!!) - all running on 13 qts of Mobil 1." "First of all - the engine MUST be mounted DEAD CENTER of the car - if the center mount is off by 1/16" of an inch - then the HeatSheet probably will not fit as they will come very close to the inner trailing arm mount point as it is. With the 930 covers - this becomes even more critical. For my car - which is primarily a track car - I did notch the HeatSheet on the right top side flange of the engine by 1/4" so I have 1/2" clearance between the top of the HeatSheet and that same trailing arm mount point - just to be on the "safe side". The left side of the engine was fine (as the joy's of hand-built cars by the factory where there are minor differences in building specs:-)" Hope this helps! J. D.
"I have a set of these radiant heat blockers on my 914-6 conversion, and they do indeed provide an additional heat sink prior to the engine. At VIR (Virginia Int'l Raceway) two weeks ago, my engine temp NEVER rose above 185 F. This is in direct correlation to 3 weeks prior at Summit Point (on very cold days) where I saw temps of 210 dF. Not saying these shields are an additional cooler, just an additional heat sink prior to the heat invading the engine. Wonder why it took so long for someone to develop these (and wondering why I didn't think of it first. . .)?"
